The Woy Woy Oval Grandstand project consisted of a new 600 seat Grandstand with spacious change rooms for both Rugby League and Rugby Union, storage areas, public amenities, canteen and club rooms. In addition to the Grandstand was a separate 100m2 cafe building and significant hard and soft landscaping packages to complete the upgrade of the precinct.
The site itself contained its own challenges with over 400t of contaminated material needing to be removed from site and a 600mm water main that services the Woy Woy peninsula requiring protection from heavy plant and machinery. It was by no means an easy site.
Hampered by an inordinate amount of wet weather North managed to keep the project on target. As the project neared completion, errors in the proposed design levels of the external works were discovered and North were instrumental in delivering an alternative solution saving the client both time and money.
LESSONS LEARNT - Through splitting up the concrete package between structure and pavements, and using ‘Peri Formwork’ systems we were able to alleviate some labour pressures our subcontractors were experiencing at a particularly busy period in our industry. On this project I also learnt to be calm yet decisive when subcontractors are under performing. It would have been easy to use aggression and punishment when trades were not achieving their agreed upon targets however, Al and I believe we gained more effort and respect by working with the subcontractors and developing strategies as a team.
